Nile

Nile - Year One

This term we are continuing our topic 'Lighthouses, lifeboats and the seaside'.

We are excited to be going to Seaham next week and on our trip will be looking out for the geographical features we have learned about. After enjoying our ice cream from Lickety Split, we will learn how to write them a thank you letter.

For the rest of the term, we will be learning about safety by the sea, environmental issues concerning the sea and in Science we will be finding out more about different seaside creatures including seagulls, crabs and turtles. Are any of these creatures omnivores? Are seagulls nocturnal or diurnal? How do we know?

We will also be doing our Sex Education unit in PSHE so I will send you the permission form for you to sign and return. Our learning talks about the necessity of having a male and a female to create a baby/young animal. We learn about this by watching a video clip of a cat who has kittens, the children think it is a boy but then on seeing the kittens realise it must be a girl. We also learn the correct scientific language for parts of a male and female's body.

Reading is still of key importance so do keep reading at home and begin to read novels to your child each night before bed. If you would like any suggestions of books to start with - just ask.
